Had this procedure been done in America on anyone far less in age than the Rav Elyashiv, the nurses & doctors would have NEEDED a Living Will or POLST in place to tell them EXACTLY how much medical care to administer, OR NOT to administer. Only HaShem knows the days of our Earthly existence, yet American medicine is seducing us into thinking we should make "the life-as-a-vegetable or death decision 'should we become too incapacitated to make the decision.'" 


My mission is to question the whole premise of the POLST and the propaganda put out about it that is seducing NON-THINKING Americans to fall for this back door end run around the issues of Death with Dignity and legalized Euthanasia.

LIFE and DEATH are cosmic enemies, battling in the heavenlies for dominance here on Earth.  We must exercise great caution, great reticence, and great thought before allying ourselves on the side of DEATH.  I am referring here only to the medical aspect of Death with the power of LIFE & DEATH in the hands of man, as there are many other aspects of Death in our powers as well. 

I'm still in great anguish over the hospital which HARD pressured myself & 5 siblings to over-ride our Mother's POLST form to pull the plug of medical care, withhold medical care, on a woman who “IS 79 YEARS OLD AND HAS LIVED A GOOD LIFE!”   Mom WAS NOT DYING!

She was not in a life or death situation when she entered the hospital.  WHY she was intubated & SOP intubated, I don't understand.  Something is wrong here, and I'm moving down to Vancouver, Washington to investigate, file various legal actions in order to learn why a hospital wants to be given authority to withhold medical care on an elderly patient who is not dying!

She's doing very well, and daily expresses her WILL TO LIVE.  Almost intuitively, as if somehow she knew I was the only child PUSHING BACK against 3 siblings & the hospital to pull the plug on her medical care, Mom repeatedly, DAILY expresses to me her GREAT JOY & LOVE OF LIFE. 

Those siblings are still working behind the scenes to get Mom's ability to decide her medical care taken out of her hands.  The powers of darkness & death swirl & hover over my Mother's body, waiting for the kill.  That’s a spiritual issue for those siblings to address individually, but I will stand against their spiritual darkness!

Mom’s POLST was problematic for the hospital as her doctor erred in filling it out, at Mom’s instruction, to require “conflicting care.”  Mom told the doctor NO on DNR, yet had Dr. Larry Lee check off 2 boxes in Section B for both “Limited Care and “Full Care.”

Doctors who have gone through years of medical instruction, supposedly are very intelligent, have taken the HIPPOCRATIC OATH, did not have “CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS” on Mom’s wishes for medical care because she had Dr. Larry Lee mark her POLST in a conflicting manner???  The hospital doctor was forced to designate Mom a FULL CODE, and THAT WAS PROBLEMATIC! 

Am I STUPID or is something wrong with the POLST, with MEDICINE?  I can assure you, I am not stupid.  The POLST is a very subjective legal document that should not be used unless people are medically and legally sophisticated, and have questioning minds.  It is a document of deception. 

WHAT IS going on in medicine? And why is it everyone seems to be drinking the kool-aid propaganda regarding Living Wills and the POLST??

 

Does NO ONE QUESTION ANYTHING?  Are there NO QUESTIONING, THINKING MINDS?? I feel alone, in abyss of people distracted by video games, hedonism, alcohol, prescription & non-mind-altering drugs.  

Update on Grandma & Oliver, HAPPY BIRTHDAYS TO ZACK & ALEX!!

Grandma Winnie Hamblin doing so well she's using the nasal oxygen only sometimes.  She is weak from 11 days in bed but has been moved to a rehab center just around the corner from Oliver's abode where she will get the workout she needs to rehabilitate.  


Mom is now able to recall what I tell her from one day to the next, and is more animated than I have heard her in years!  She's very happy to hear about her youngest son Oliver's progress, and Dvorah's graduating today, with honors.  
I am going down to Vancouver, Washington this week to begin process of moving there, and told Mom when I come to visit her, I will show her the pictures and video of Dvorah & Oliver.  That makes her happy, too.  


Spoke to my brother Oliver over the phone last night for the 1st time in 6 weeks.  We talked 106 minutes and he didn't fall asleep once!  Not only that, he sounded YOUNG, at least 10 years younger.  I don't recall the last time he sounded so good!!!

Do you consider yourself:

1. Medically sophisticated?
2. Legally savvy?
3. Do you get plenty of oxygen to your brain? 
4. Are you in good health?  
5. Are you on mind-altering, or judgment impairing medications?  
6. What is your age? 
7. What is your level of education?

GOOD!  Now, I want you to pretend you are a 79 year old woman, born in 1932, with an 8th grade education.  You have COPD, you've just come off a ventilator because of some breathing difficulties, your first intubation.  Three years ago when you were 76 years old, your doctor offered you a POLST, Physicians' Order of Life-Sustaining Treatment Form, in case you became too incapcitated to make your own health care decisions.  He said he would explain it to you.

You are under the influence of mind-altering drugs, as well as medications for COPD, as well as other judgment impairing medications that keep your head in a cloud, affecting your judgment and your comprehension.  You are a trusting, compliant, humble old woman.  Your doctor knows you are impaired, so he explains as best he can to you each section of the POLST, and marks the answers you give him:

1. Section A:  DNR- if no pulse or breathing, do not resuscitate.  You do not want to live as a vegetable.
2. Section B:  Yes on Limited Interventions AND FULL TREATMENT.  
3. Section C:  Yes, use antibiotics.
4. Section D:  Yes, artificial nutrition by tube

You and the doctor sign off on the form, but there is no advanced directive mentioned or included, see Page 2 of link below:

Now you have been admitted to Southwest Medical Center, come through just fine with an intubation which was successfully removed on Day 6, and you are now on oxygen tubes breathing through your nose.  You are resting, not yet ambulatory.  

Unbeknown to you, while you were sedated during the intubation, the hospital had advised your 2 or 3 of your 6 children there is a problem with your POLST.  It contains conflicting information.  The doctors need CLEAR instructions on what medical care to deliver.  The hospital states that because your POLST is unclear, they HAD to designate you a FULL CODE, DO Resuscitate.  This is a problem for them.  The hospital wants you to update the form, but you can't.  You are sedated. The hospital wants the six siblings to agree to a spokesperson for the family, so that when the ventilator is removed, and you have been off the sedation medication for a few hours, that child can speak to you and either get you to change your POLST to choices reflecting the DNR you marked in Section A, or get Power of Attorney over your medical care.  You know nothing about 3 of your children, 1 a nurse at this same hospital, who kept telling the other 3 children that you were dying, and it is time to let you go.  The hospital keeps applying pressure on your 3 of your children to come to a consensus on a spokesperson, and 'possibly to become your POA, agreed upon by an undefined "consensus" of the children. The hospital has all the paperwork and a public notary.  They won't say how many children need to agree on taking over your health care.  Is it 4 of the 6?  5 of the 6?  The hospital wants to give the family full support in getting the POLST corrected.  You have no idea of the battle and the lies going on with some of your children, perpetrated by the hospital's need, which is more important than your actual health care.  

Daily the nurses told your oldest daughter you were doing well, and were concerned about the inaccurate information 3 siblings were trying to give the other 3 siblings, because you weren't any where near to dying.  Your stats never varied, staying consistently good, and you remained stable for the duration of the intubation.

The battle over who should decide what you REALLY MEANT in your POLST, who should decide your medical care, rages on between the sibling who is a nurse, and your eldest daughter.   The nurse sibling maintains you are dying, and we need to let Mom go and not make Mom suffer.  Eldest daughter counters that Mom has never expressed she  were suffering to your eldest daughter and in fact, seemed quite happy.  Neverthless, the nurse daughter is adamant, as is the son who has been spreading the worst lies, saying Mom is on her death bed, she'll never survive what she's going through, the son with a psychology degree.   Your eldest daughter remains steadfast, and maintains the POLST is quite CLEAR: unless Mom were to be very handicapped, a vegetable, Mom wants to live, as indicated by her other choices for full treatment, even tube feeding.  So Mom is clueless about the battles, but now she's off the ventilator.  

A hospital representative comes to your ICU room in the hospital and asks if she can chat with you about your care.  Being a compliant, trusting older woman, you give her your permission.  She asks if you want a family member present, but doesn't say why.  You don't see a reason to bother family members just to chat with the nice lady, so you reply no, that's not necessary.  Your generation doesn't believe in bothering family and besides, they're busy with their families and their jobs.  The nice lady starts with some lovely chit chat, speaking softly and soothingly.  She seems like such a nice lady, and she is concerned about your care.  

After a few minutes she mentions your POLST, asks again if you want a family member present, you reply no, so she proceeds.  She says some of the information is unclear, and the hospital and the doctors just want to be really clear because they want to give you the very best care that you deserve.  You respond, "oh...that's nice."   The nice lady mentions some areas of the form she just needs a little bit more information about.  She does some explaining, asks you some questions, makes some changes on the form, and then asks if you would look it over, of course knowing you have no clue what the complex form means in reality.  She asks if you have any questions, is there anything she can do for you, and then asks you to sign the form.  It's a simple matter she assures you, and thanks you, reassures you they are there to gvie you the very best care, and just let them know if you need anything.  You ask for some pecan ice cream, and she says she will speak to your nurse about it.  She does a little more chit chat with you, and then leaves you to rest.  You're so tired now.  You've enjoyed the nice company, and are feeling good that such nice people care about your medical care.  

You don't know it, but your medical care has just been changed, legally, while you are impaired.  It now reflects consistency with DNR, not life-saving measures.  

The next time you come to the hospital, with your COPD, the hospital can now, regardless of your stats, withold life-sustaining support, legally.  You will be legally murdered...er...allowed to die.  

1984, Kool-aid, Pro-Choice, Anti-sanctity of Life = POLST Form.  POLST Form, is a legal instrument. It is an extremely flawed legal instrument, marketed as a humane and compassionate and convenient instrument for the patient, BUT:  

• Contains conflicting info 

• Contains confusing terms 

• Has undefined terms

• Has caveats, confusing caveats

• There is No disclosure that it is a legal instrument 

• There is No disclosures on ramifications to patient's health care

• "Health Care Professional" fills out the form 

• Presumes HC professional explains, in lay terms, each item 

• Presumes HC professional explains, in lay terms, impact on patient's care

• Presumes patient fully comprehends 

• Presumes every patient is medically & legally sophisticated

• Presumes patient is not mentally impaired by age, medical condition and medications, language or 

other comprehension limiting condition. 

• Can be interpreted subjectively by health care professionals

• Patient is not afforded a legal advocate  

• Once in place, POLST, undermines the medical care of a patient, And

• Usurps the rights of patients who did not fully comprehend, but weren’t aware they did not understand. 

• It undermines the sanctity of life.  

• Takes advantage of The Most Vulnerable populations: the aged, the ill, the disabled, the medically & legally unsophisticated.  

• Protects medical community, therefore it 

• Is a conflict of interest for a health care professional to administer the process of explanation & filling 

   out form as it does not protect the patient’s rights but rather those of the medical community.  

• No protections in place for the patient.

The eldest daughter is wondering how many vulnerable people are seduced into doing the POLST, and upon hospitalization, are told there is a slight problem with the form?  How many of these cases have Southwest Medical Center "updated" or "corrected?"

Criminals Have More Rights than My Mom....and it is even Obama's Fault!

I need help protecting my Mother's medical rights.  

Let me say at the outset, that two representatives of SMC lacked integrity during my interactions with them.  They are masters of rabbit trails,  medical mantras,  changing the subject,  putting words in mouth,  and purposely misled me: Lynn Crawford & Linda Benak.  These are two very  dishonest women, and if this is the culture at SMC, heaven help SMC's patients.

My mom is 79 and has COPD - a conglomeration of various respiratory conditions all lumped into one name.  It encompasses so many diseases....I guess it's just easier to lump them all into one lump.  I sure as heck don't know which one of these other formerly-named diseases Mom has, but I do know that asthma runs on her side of the family.

Mom has a POLST Form on file, which her doctor walked her through verbally in 2008, and he checked off her choices. Apparently he didn't explain it well enough, because she had him mark what SMC, Southwestern Medical Center, Vancouver, WA, is now calling conflicting wishes and IT'S A PROBLEM FOR THE HOSPITAL.  

The POLST, "Physicians Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment,  is a legal document and must be filled out by the attending physician, and signed off by both doctor and patient.  If you've never looked at one of these forms, please do.   
The POLST should be illegal.  I'll try to explain why.  

It is full of medical chicanery, lying in stealth, beneath the  medical terminology & jargon & subtle nuances that many who are not medically sophisticated, and especially those with either mental, language, or other comprehension deficiencies are not going to fully understand.  

It's confusing, conflicting, complicated.  

It can be interpreted subjectively.  

I'm sure it covers all the LEGAL bases, EXCEPT ONE: PATIENTS RIGHTS.

It fails to give any Disclosure that it is a legal instrument, and the patient should be afforded the right to seek legal counsel.

Therefore, the patient, oftentimes, is not making a fully informed decision, nor is advised the document is a legal instrument, nor is the patient offered the suggestion to seek legal counsel for full disclosing of the legal ramifications of the document.  

Simply put, the POLST Form is a CYA legal instrument that works in the best interests of the medical community, andagainst the best interests of the patient.

How can this be legal?

A criminal has more protected rights than a 79 year old woman, with a POLST Form on file, when she is admitted to Southwestern Medical Center of Vancouver, Washington.

The precipitating scenario:

Early Monday morning Mom had a coughing fit and expressed she was having difficulty breathing.  She was admitted into SMC, and they intubated her, why I do not know, but they said her stats were good, and she was stable.    They try to remove the ventilator tube as soon as possible because the body will get lazy and let the ventilator do the work for it.  The nurse says if they cannot get her off it by Day 14, they will put in a tracheotomy tube.  

By Friday, DAY 3, they had Mom on very little sedation and she was doing well with that.  They keep a patient sedated because the ventilator tube is in the throat, is painful, and the patient's reaction is to tear it out, potentially harming themselves. They weren't able to successfully remove the ventilator on Friday so they will try again the next day and the next day, until either it is removed or it is Day 14. 

Also on Friday was the first time the nurse informed me of the POLST Form Mom had on file at Dr. Larry Lee's office.  I knew nothing about it, so did online research, had the hospital email me a copy of it when I was unable to locate one online.

THE PROBLEM.   SMC claims that Mom, on her form, checked DNR-Do Not Resuscitate, but checked YES on every other kind of medical care:  IV fluids, antibiotics, cardiac monitor, feeding through a tube,  intubation,  advanced airway interventions,  mechanical interventions,  and cardioversion, among others.  SMC CLAIMS this is a PROBLEM for the doctors because the information THEY CLAIM, is conflicting.

Mom didn't fill out the POLST, her doctor did. 

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT SOME OF THESE TERMS MEAN?  Are you medically savvy?  Get plenty of oxygen to your brain?  In good health?   Are you on mind-altering medications?   How old are you?  What is your level of education?  

My Mom has an 8th grade education.

I'm leaving out all the caveats and other misleading information on the form.  

It is HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE AND SUBJECT TO SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATION!

The PROBLEM, in more detail, according to SMC, is that Mom had her doctor mark in section A, DNR, "Do Not Resuscitate" but in sections B, C, and D, yes, she wants full care.  I suggested that perhaps Mom meant she didn't want to live as a vegetable, but otherwise, it's very clear that she wants to live.

(I'm just wondering why the doctor did not fill out the form accurately, or at least that's what SMC is telling me.  Initially Nurse Amy & Lynn Crawford led me to believe that Mom had made the errors, UNTIL I READ PAGE 2, and saw the doctor is the one who fills it out, at the instruction of the patient.   

WAS HE COVERING HIS ARSE on this form because he KNEW Mom's medications and medical conditions, and her lack of medical sophisticatication prevented her from being a FULLY INFORMED PATIENT of her rights?  Or does he secretly have a problem with the form, too?)

Who's suggestion was it that Mom even fill out this form, because CONTRARY TO HOW IT IS MARKETED to the medically unsophisticated, it is not about the patient and IS ALL ABOUT CYA FOR THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY.

I'm questioning, too, could it be that with RISING HEALTH CARE COSTS, and the implementation of government ENFORCED medical insurance for almost all Americans, and the attendent costs associated with it,  that this legal instrument may be being used as a means to an end?  An ending of a life, an old life, a sick person, someone who is using valuable resources?...

What got me to thinking like this was Lynn Crawford of SMC kept telling me that Mom had lived a good, long life, that she IS 79.  

I bristled about the third time she made that statement.  So now we make decisions to end a person's life because of their age?

Mom is stable.  She's doing fine.  

WHY THE PRESSURE?

WHY THE HARD PUSH from SMC??? To get a "consensus" among ALL SIX OF HER CHILDREN TO AGREE TO SELECTING ONE OF US AS OUR SPOKESPERSON & GETTING MOM TO ASSIGN ONE OF US AS HER POAHC, Power of Attorney over her health care (this POAHC terminology was Lynn Crawford's language, not mine).  

Lynn Crawford is with SMC's dept of Bridges Palliative Care. She is a former Critical Care Nurse. 

Lynn would NOT BACK DOWN off attempting to pressuring me to agreeing to over-riding Mom's wishes via having us kids make the decision.  I kept reiterating that Mom is stable, she's doing fine. There is no need to change the form, or assign a family spokesperson or a POAHC. 

"Can't we just wait and cross that bridge when we come to it?"  No, that's not good enough for Lynn Crawford.  I asked her repeatedly why she was pressuring me.  She denied do so....a thousand times (denial doesn't mean she wasn't), but one lame excuse she gave was that because of the conflicting information on Mom's POLST, the doctors at the hospital did not have clear instructions on what care should be given Mom.  

I asked her, well, what would you have done differently, when Mom came in, if there were no POLSTForm on file at all?  Full medical treatment would have been administered.  As soon as the patient was extubated, ventilator tube removed, and patient was off the sedation meds, they would sit down by the patient and tell them all about this wonderful form.

"While the patient is in ICU, on mind-altering medications," I asked? Yep!

I asked pointed questions, got obfuscated answers, and a whole lot of BS.  By the time we got off the phone, 1.25 hours later, I was so worried I looked up the COO's office and put in a call asking that Lynn be removed.

I am feeling very pressured, and cannot get a straight answer out of hospital staff about my questions on their hard push to supercede Mom's POLST Form.  It isn't affecting the level of care she's getting.  

So, WHY?! WHY?!  WHY?! 

Further, Mom has resisted all pressure from some of my siblings who've never stopped trying to become her POA.  

If this is such a "PROBLEM" (again, Lynn's words), with Mom's POLST, why would a doctor, a medical professional, allow Mom to request she be given conflicting care?  

My sister is a nurse at SMC.  From DAY 1, she has been saying we kids need to over-ride Mom's POLST.  Is she using her position as an employee in any unethical manner?  She has been pushing hard on my two youngest siblings who are under-educated, and medically unsophisticated.  Her new claim now is she says Mom is in End-Stage COPD.  Really?  Funny, all the people, nurses,  head nurses, I've talked to, not one said Mom was in End-Stage COPD, but that she is doing well.  

So now we over-ride Mom's wishes, trample on her medical rights?  What's next?  Tell the hospital to withold life-sustaining support, effectively, and LEGALLY MURDERING MOM?

No medical rights.  

Yes, that's the way my sister and two brothers see the issue.  My sister, the RN, says I just don't understand because I don't work with patients like Mom all day long and I'm not a medical professional, and (perhaps I'm not as calloused about sick people as she is) and I don't have knowledge of COPD.  Partly true, but I have personally observed miracles, and known doctors to be wrong on multiple occasions.

  My grandson Christopher was supposed to be born with a severe form of spina bifida, a vegetable.  Doctors told his parents to abort that black baby.  Fortunately, they didn't.  He was born PERFECT.  So many other instances  I could document where doctors have been wrong.  It happens every day....

My baby brother, Mom's sixth and last child was not able to come home with her from the hospital.  He was born with pulmonary problems.  Mom cried as we picked her up that day, without her baby, 54 years ago.  That brother has just come through a near death episode caused by an infection & his organs were shutting down.  Legacy Hospital professionals did not expect him to live through the weekend.  5.5 weeks later, he's off the ventialtor, off pureed foods, and has a trach tube which will be replaced with a smaller one tomorrow, and is ahead of his progress schedule.  I 'm 63, have COPD, never smoked, but drove inner city buses for 20 years, so I injested a lot of diesel fumes.  I'm what my RN sister says the medical profession calls "A Difficult Patient" because all the doctor prescribed drugs I am supposed to take,  made me literally too sick too function.  They reduced my immunity severely, so I chucked them and never went back to the doctors.  I don't have time to be sick!  Mom's sister has had asthma as long as I can remember.  She is 7 years older than Mom, and just went to church last Sunday.  My son was born with asthma, but he's never missed a day of school or work over it.  He's 36.  Think there could be a GENETIC  PRE-DISPOSITION IN THE FAMILY?

Are we going to start denying medical care based on a genetic pre-dispositionS?

Three of my siblings all believe Mom should also be cut off medical care because

"She's just going to go back to the nursing home and keep smoking and drinking Cola!"  A very big sin in their religion! 

 Never mind that some of these same siblings are sex predators,  pedophiles,  adulterers many times over,  alcoholics, and, obese by choice. Is their hostility towards Mom's so-called sinning is a conflict of interest, or a hardened heart from years of sinning themselves?  They don't know that Mom will go back to sinning...er...drinking Cola's & smoking...  

Hmm...

Using these siblings logic, the RN sister, who full well understands the dangers of obesity, shouldn't get any more hip or knee replacements until she loses 200 lbs, and another sibling shouldn't get any medical help when he develops pulmonary problems from years of smoking, or any care for a bad liver after years of drinking like a fish, and the middle son? Well, he'll get his reward in the next life for what he did to another sister, myself, and ALL FOUR of his wives, whom he married for their money.  Based on his extremely immoral life, I'm thinking he shouldn't get any medical care at all, because of all the lives he's damaged with his sexual deviancy.  

BUT!  WHERE DOES IT ALL END?  This  playing G-d?   It's common for medical professionals, with all their expertise, to get "The god-Complex."  Doesn't make it right.  Anyone of us can come up with reasons why people should be denied appropriate medical care.  Still doesn't make it right to play G-d with other's lives through their medical care.

Mom's wishes are absolutely clear.  She WANTS TO LIVE.  

Why my siblings are getting hung up over Mom's COPD, her drinking Colas and smoking cigarettes (which she never did while raising us) and in spite of the fact this is her FIRST INTUBATION, and that she is doing well, inspite of the FACTS, and INSERTING THEIR OWN PREJUDICES as a rationalization and justification for over-riding Mom's medical rights to receive full medical care, as stipulated by her POLSTForm, that I cannot answer.  

I am angered, bewildered, very hurt, and sick deep down in the pit of my gut.  Between my siblings and Southwestern Medical Center, my Mother is a goner... She's not being given the dignity she deserves to die when the Creator calls her time, not MAN, nor the respect of her clearly obvious wishes.  

Off topic, FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

If the powers that be, can manipulate the elite, the educated, the medical professionals into selective application of medical care, for whatever reason, and if the powers that be can fan the flames of religious bigotry,  and racism,  how far off will America be from having our own Holocaust?  It just takes LEADERS who understand the human dynamics that Stalin, Hitler, Castro and Mao did, leaders who have crediblity and social status, leaders in medicine, leaders in religion who build up their members at the expense of and by putting down those of another religion,  add some class and race envy to the mixture,  add some evil people that don't need an excuse to be evil,  add some hard financial times where people can no longer get living wage jobs....

Is it just me seeing that MEDICINE is already on THE SLIPPERY SLOPE? 

My Mom refused to be a victim of an emotionally abusive, unfaithful, alcoholic husband, but she will end up becoming a victim of corrupt, evil children, and a "system" designed to ensnare & ensure the end of many lives.  My siblings will not protect our Mother.  They have already judged, tried, and sentenced her as unfit to live because she smokes, drinks Cola, and has COPD.  They have lost their way...  and our Mother will lose her life.  She may not even have the joy of being with these children, on the other side.

She was a good Mom, and I will write some wonderful, amazing stories about her in the upcoming days in my attempts to cope with my grief.  

Please pray my siblings will see before it is too late, they are being sucked in, ensnared, not only by their own evil, but that they are being used by a corrupt SYSTEM, to legally murder people against their will.

DESIREE REED UPDATE

When it rains....
This weekend, my oldest daughter Missy, 3rd from left, informed me that my #2 grandchild, 2nd from left, Desipunzel's cancer is back, after a year and a half.  But that's not all!  Missy also told me Desi's scoliosis has been re-diagnosed at Klippel-Feil Syndrome, Type lll.   Link to info re:  KLIPPEL-FEIL SYNDROME  KFS.
Not good, but knowing disabled people with severe disabilities as I do, leading full lives, I'm confident Desi can lead her life as fully as is her desire is strong to do so.
As Grandma Betty Nelson Tavenner used to tell me:

 "WHERE THERE'S A WILL....THERE IS A WAY!"
A good life motto for any of us, and definitely one I adopted long ago.
I don't know what kind of cancer Desi had, or has.  Communication gap.
Desi's paternal bubbe died too young of kidney cancer, and we know the tendency to get cancer's can be genetic.  Desi has a strong constitution, and is only 20, so I'm not overly concerned about her health.
The young body has a spectacular ability to regenerate and heal, and overall, her KFS notwithstanding, she is a healthy young woman.  Nevertheless, we know........ that PRAYER WORKS, so please include her in your daily prayers.  

OLIVER HAMBLIN UPDATE

6/2/2011 My baby brother, Oliver, or as we call him, Oly, has progressed remarkably well.  He's off his intubation,  no more pureed meals,  and is scheduled to have his tracheotomy tube either removed or reconfigured, or something, not sure what yet. BARUCH HASHEM!  He's still at Vibra Specialty Hospital in Portland, Oregon, and his daughter Rebecca Ramirez, repeats the scenario our mother did years ago when Oly was a baby.  Oly was #6 baby.  Rebecca & Jesus have 6 children.  Rebecca goes to visit her father every day or two, just like Mom did with him when he was hospitalized as an infant for emergency tracheotomy.  He had so many allergies there was hardly anything Mom could feed him.  Imagine preparing meals for a family of eight, (this was before today's fast foods when women cooked meals from scratch), and one child, a baby has to have different foods specifically prepared for that baby.  Thinking back on that day when baby Oly couldn't breathe, with 5 of us at home, Dad at work in Portland (we lived 25 miles outside of Portland, in Sherwood)....  
I cannot imagine the horror this 25 year old mother, my Mom,  must have felt as she scooped Oly up, ran him to the car, and drove him 25 miles to the hospital for the emergency tracheotomy.  

This was also before there were ambulances and medic trucks around every corner, in the neighborhood.  We didn't live in a neighborhood.  We lived on a dirt road, 5 miles outside of minuscule Sherwood, with 2 neighbors: the Stahlneckers across the road, from whom we got our whole milk, straight from their cows, and the Yosts, up and across the road, from whom we got our eggs.
We owned 20 acres of land, most of which was filled with Douglas Fir trees, though Dad did rent out, to someone, a few acres for farming.  
Mom was a brave young woman, but women were pretty hard stock in those days.  They had to be.  They could look spectacularly soft & gorgeous in their svelt bodies, pretty dresses, curled and coiffed hair dos, matching purse, high heels, and gloves though, too.  Our mom with her raven black hair and hazel eyes was a real beauty.  I hope to get a hold of some pictures of her, eventually.
The only makeup she ever wore was lipstick, which she blotted with a square of toilet tissue folded in half, pressed between her lips, and then she would lightly rub the lipstick blotted tissue on each cheek.   It was considered improper for a lady to be in public wo lipstick.

My sister, sibling #5, Laurie, will call the hospital at 6:00 p.m. tonight for an update on Mom.  Because the hospital nurses won't talk to anyone not immediate family, this morning while Laurie was at work, I called Laurie's husband, Willie, and then flashed over to Rebecca, and Will called the hospital.  I did the talking, and identified myself as Winnie's daughter to Mom's nurse, while Rebecca and Will listened in to the nurse's report.  This way Rebecca can update her Dad, Oly, and reassure him that Mom is okay, and Willie can update Laurie so she doesn't worry too much either, until she can call the hospital for this evening's 6:00 p.m. call to get an update.
Laurie and Oly have significant "LOSS" issues because of what happened to them when they were young, so they do not handle loss well, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Mom.
All on that for now my little chickadees.

6/1/2011 Mom, Winifred Harriet Hamblin, admitted to Southwest Medical Ctr in Vancouver, Washington early morning hours.  She had coughing fit, couldn't breathe.  Initial reports indicate pneumonia.   She is stable, but sedated because the doctor has her intubated.  Sedating her, as was done with Oliver, too, is done so the patient will not rip the tube out and damage vocal cords.  It is painful procedure so they are given pain relief medications.  Mom responded quickly and well to the procedure, her oxygen level being at 93% which is fairly good for someone with COPD.  Mom, Oliver, Giovanni and I all have COPD.  Asthma runs in the maternal side of the family, so don't smoke EVER.  It's not worth it once one gets older and the body starts it's downhill aging process.  I didn't smoke, but driving 10 to 12 hours a day for my job as a bus driver is like smoking.  On the other hand, Mom's idea of breakfast is a cup of coffee, a can of Coke, and 3 cigarettes.  I think she's done damn well for someone is 79 yo, don't you?

OH HAPPY DAY! My baby brother not only lived to see his 54th Birthday...

He is off the ventilator 22 hours of the day!  Still has trach tube, cannot talk of course, has to have ALL his food pureed, but he's ALIVE!!  Baruch HaShem!
